THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO - UK SERIES PREMIERE WEEK!
March 23, 2005 - Vol 8, No 12
The weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts worldwide.
by Benjamin F. Elliott
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/thisweekindoctorwho
Saturday 26 March:
BBC One - 5:25PM - Doctor Who: A New Dimension
BBC One - 7PM - Doctor Who: Rose (series premiere)
BBC Three - 7:45PM - Doctor Who Confidential: Back From The Future
Sunday 27 March (Easter Sunday):
BBC Three - 7PM - Doctor Who: Rose (BBC Three premiere)
Tuesday 5 April:
CBC - 8PM - Doctor Who: Rose (Canada's turn)
Doctor Who picked up in Netherlands, more interviews/specials, BBC Three repeats, BBC Kids Canada buys more old episodes, good news for American Who, and end of a streak at MPT Maryland.
The BBC know how to create publicity when they want to. Doctor Who
has practically taken over UK TV and radio (as far as those of us
outside the UK can tell) in the run-up to the series premiere on 26
March. It is amazing to behold, even an ocean away. It is a moment
in Doctor Who history the likes of which we are unlikely to ever see
again. Welcome back, Doctor!
Netherlands public broadcaster Nederland 3 http://portal.omroep.nl/ned3 was revealed on the Dutch CEEFAX teletext service as having picked up the new Doctor Who series for a premiere in 2005 or early 2006, marking the 3rd reported sale outside the UK and the first to a country whose primary language is not English.
BBC Three http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree has put Doctor Who on their
Sunday schedule beginning 27 March at 7PM. Episodes air exactly one
day after their BBC One premieres. No repeats of Doctor Who
Confidential are scheduled - it appears you will have to see that
show the first time or see them when they get to the BBC's Doctor
Who website. A 15 minute repeat briefly appeared on advanced
schedules for Sunday 3 April at 7:45PM - it then disappeared, and
Farscape will air there weekly with Doctor Who as a sci-fi block
beginning 3 April.
BBC Radio 2 http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2 aired part 1 of
their "Project: Who?" special last night. It is now on their listen
again section. At about 57 minutes in length, it was hosted by
Anthony Stewart Head (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Monarch Of The
Glen). The documentary was very well put together, with lots of
interviews. Warning - it contains clips from many episodes of the
series which reveal a fair bit about the show. If you want to avoid
spoilers, wait for the special to hit CD in May. Part 2 airs Tuesday
at 8:30PM BST.
BBC Radio Wales http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/radiowales has revealed
that their multi-part documentary on "Dr Who: Back In Time" will air
Saturdays at 1:06PM with repeats Sundays at 5:33PM starting 26
March. Unlike earlier reports, the Radio Wales website claims that
the special is 2 episodes long, not 3.
BBC Southern Counties http://www.bbc.co.uk/england/southerncounties
will see a 4 hour show on the new Doctor Who and debate on UK vs US
Sci-Fi from 9PM to 1AM GMT on 26 March, hosted by Tommy Boyd.
Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper are doing a bunch of
interviews over the next few days. The ones I've spotted are in the
New Series section. There are probably others.
BBC Kids' http://www.bbckids.ca advance schedule has revealed that the Jon Pertwee stories will begin airing on this Canadian digital channel Saturday April 16. A deep search of their website showed an entry for The Trial Of A Time Lord, indicating that they may have bought Colin Baker stories as well. BBC Kids has issued a press releases, which does not mention Colin Baker, so I wouldn't expect him in the near future.
BBC Kids' Pertwee Press Release:
Just wanted to pass on to you some information about BBC Kids' acquisition of The Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) stories...
Canadian fans of the classic Doctor Who can watch Tom Baker (1974-1981) and Peter Davison (1982-1982) episodes on BBC Kids, Monday through Friday at 2 a.m. ET.
Beginning April 16, for the first time on BBC Kids, viewers can catch the Jon Pertwee series (1970-1974) on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 a.m. ET on BBC Kids. The first story of this series, Spearhead From Space introduces viewers to the terrifying Autons for the first time.
Please note that for the stories Doctor Who And The Silurians, Terror of the Autons and The Dæmons, BBC Kids has acquired the colourized versions.
Additionally, the following stories are unavailable and have not been acquired by BBC Kids:
-The Ambassadors of Death
-The Mind of Evil
-Day of the Daleks
-Frontier In Space
-Planet of the Daleks
-Invasion of the Dinosaurs
-Death to the Daleks
Please let me know if you have any questions. Cheers, Peter Hill
Program Manager BBC CANADA, BBC Kids & Discovery Health Channel
Alliance Atlantis Broadcasting Inc.
American Who http://www.americanwho.net is not ending after all.
Press release:
After many emails asking me to keep going (and an appearance at my
front door from a chap with a leather jacket, jeans, and a Northern
accent), I have decided to continue "American Who." However, I will
return to producing the series after taking a four month break.
After doing this show for two years, and also "Sci-fi Overdrive," I
need two immediate things: interviews and rest! Hence, I am going to
CollectorMania to make arrangements with those from the series who
haven't been interviewed. Also, I need to take a break from
both "AmWho" and "Sci-fi Overdrive," as I've been doing shows of
this nature, since 2001, when it all started off as a live local
radio talk program.
As a plus, expect some "Who" flavored hours of "Sci-fi Overdrive"
during the summer months, as I need to educate the populace about
the roots of this new series. And also expect a repeat series
on "AmWho" during May, June, July, and August, at one show per month.
"American Who" will be back- in September. Sorry for the
inconvenience.
Thanks!
Joey Reynolds
co-host/co-producer "Sci-fi Overdrive" http://www.scifioverdrive.com
Maryland Public TV http://www.mpt.org made a late change to their schedule last week, pulling Invasion of the Dinosaurs in favor of a pledge free repeat of pledge special Rock `n' Roll Forever: Ed Sullivan's Greatest Hits. This sudden action represents the first time Doctor Who has not aired sometime during the weekend on MPT since July 4, 1998, a 6 year, 8 month streak that was the longest continuous run of the series anywhere on the planet, just days longer than the length this column has existed. Like Cal Ripkin's baseball streak, I guess MPT's streak had to end eventually. MPT and TV Guide http://www.tvguide.com `s web sites currently show them skipping Invasion of the Dinosaurs in favor of Death to the Daleks this weekend, while Zap2it http://www.zap2it.com claims Invasion of the Dinosaurs will air.
